A virtual machine which only contains an operating system and a single application, is called a virtual appliance. Virtual appliances are exceptionally reliable because the application its settings and its data are completely self contained. As a consequence, the application can be moved, copied, restored, repaired, upgraded and restarted without effecting any other applications and appliances running on the same physical host server.
