 Firefox 4 Released
Firefox 4 Released
After a total of 2 Release Candidates and 13 Betas, Firefox 4.0 has finally been released. In the rush to 'keep up', the practise of releasing software early, at the expensive of stability, has become all too common. Mozilla however, knowing a lot was riding on this particular release, put Firefox 4.0 through an extended beta phase in order to make reasonably sure that it was stable.

We have tested Firefox in both home and office network environments and found no problems. For home use we often recommend Firefox Portable because, like all Portable Applications, it's easier to both Backup and Sync. In a network, a standard install works perfectly, storing most of its settings in the users redirected Application Data folder rather than in the unwieldy windows registry.

Many technical 'under the hood' improvements have been made in this release to allow the running of Web Based Applications which, using new programming technologies, are becoming increasingly able to match their desktop counterparts. Other Notable Features include an Improved Interface, App Tabs, Tab Groups & Firefox Sync.

UPDATE : Since this article was written, Mozilla has changed to a six weekly release schedule and changed it's version numbering system to whole numbers only. Consequently, Firefox's version number now only reflects the chronological order in which it was released, and no longer indicates what, or by how much, that release has changed. Updates can often break Add-ons and Web applications, so remember to carry out compatibility checks and backups before you upgrade.
